A family in a small French town are accused of murdering a man over an alleged debt.
The family, who are also accused of taking money from the dead man’s relatives, are in police custody.
The suspect is being held at a Paris jail.
The accused is being charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, and possession of stolen property.
The deceased man was reportedly a 65-year-old pensioner who was a widower and father of two.
A group of relatives from the nearby village of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which is near the town, allegedly borrowed money from a man who had a history of financial problems, and the two men allegedly beat him with a hammer.
Police say the elderly man died of his injuries, according to France 24.
Authorities say the victim’s relatives were allegedly threatened and intimidated by the accused.
“The accused’s family members were threatened by the suspects, who had told them that they would have to pay their debts and that they were not allowed to go out without a police escort,” a police source told France 24 on Monday.
The suspects’ whereabouts are unknown, according a French police statement.
