The last time I saw the Barbie doll, I was still in diapers and a toddler was sitting on my lap.
Barbie, which was born in 1947 and was popular with baby boomers from the 1950s through the 1970s, became the most popular doll in history by being the first Barbie doll to be made by Mattel, the toy company.
The doll’s popularity skyrocketed after its launch, and she became the #1 most-sold doll in the world.
But in 2012, the doll lost her crown when her likeness was used in a fake ad campaign that claimed the doll’s owner was a pedophile.
The scandal prompted Mattel to drop the doll, and it has since been replaced by the new, much more appealing Barbie.
The next year, a woman named Lisa Marie Waters was accused of making a video that was intended to expose the pedophile who owns Barbie.
After a yearlong investigation, the New York Attorney General’s Office announced in July 2018 that they had opened a criminal investigation against Waters, and charged her with “disturbing the peace, and making false and misleading statements to police.”
In a statement, Mattel said that Waters was not responsible for the video, but they “condemn this false statement made by Ms. Waters and ask that the public be aware that she is not responsible and is not the person or person’s agent.”
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In the meantime, the story of Barbie’s fall from grace has made it into the news.
“Barbie has been taken down, but her legacy lives on in her beautiful, timeless doll,” Disney President Peter Schulz said in a statement.
